Search Gaston County Voter Registration
The official N.C. State Board of Elections Voter Search is the first stop for one person. Enter a first and last name, then keep at least one status box selected. A middle initial, birth year, and Gaston County filter can separate people with the same name. The service is free and requires JavaScript. Results may include registration details, assigned jurisdictions, a polling place, an available sample ballot, absentee-ballot information, and participation history.

Start broad if the spelling is uncertain. Add the county and year only when the first results are too wide. Reset clears all controls. For a custom list or a physical election record, use the Gaston County Board of Elections rather than trying to browse the individual lookup as a county roll.

Those filters explain why two people with the same name can return different registration profiles without exposing either person’s complete date of birth.
Gaston County Voter Record Fields
The individual result offers a readable profile, while the downloadable file exposes a far wider set of public fields. The current file layout includes identifiers, status, name, address, registration facts, districts, and public identity-check indicators. NCID is the statewide voter key. A county voter-registration number is the county-level key. Both are useful when names change or repeat.

Published status codes include A for active, D for denied, I for inactive, R for removed, and S for temporary military or overseas registration. A masked name shown as “#” or a registration date shown as “xx/xx/xxxx” means county staff are reviewing the data. NCSBE masks those fields to avoid releasing confidential or incorrect information.
Ballot Choices Stay Private
Participation history records that a person took part in an election. It never reveals a candidate choice or any vote marked on a ballot. The separate NCSBE voter-history data covers entries from the past ten years and can be linked by NCID or by the county registration number. Each entry may show the election, party, county, precinct, and voting method.
This difference matters when reading Gaston County voter records. “Voted” means participation, not support for a person, party, or measure. Party registration also does not prove how anyone voted. Those limits prevent a public voter roll from becoming a ballot record.
Note: An election-history entry confirms participation only; it cannot be used to infer a voter’s private selections.
Confidential Gaston County Voter Data
North Carolina draws the public and confidential line in G.S. 163-82.10. Public electronic lists may carry a name, county voter ID, residence and mailing address, age rather than full birth date, party, precinct, districts, and voting history. A voter signature may be viewed, but the public may not copy or trace it.
Confidential by law. Full or partial Social Security numbers, full dates of birth, driver-license numbers, specified email addresses, registration-agency identity, voter-photo-ID images and voting-ID copies are withheld. A qualifying protected voter’s residential address is also concealed.
The file can display yes or no identity-validation flags without disclosing the underlying number. Aggregate information may also be released if no person can be identified. This split is why birth year can appear even though the complete birth date cannot.

The current Gaston extract uses county ID 36, and the statewide system refreshes its snapshot on Sunday evening. Removed records drop out when the most recent last-voted date is more than ten years old.

It also carries historical election snapshots spanning more than twenty years, while voter-level point-in-time snapshots are described as reaching back more than fifteen years. That statewide source is best for a routine electronic extract. Gaston’s local form remains useful when labels, selected fields, a physical file, or staff research is needed.
Order Custom Gaston Voter Records
G.S. 163-82.10 allows any person to ask the county board for a countywide list or selected precinct lists. Selections may use party, gender, race, registration date, precinct, voter history, legislative or congressional district, and applicable local districts. The Gaston voter-record request form asks for a specific description and says to use a separate form for each different type.
- Describe the requested public voter records on the form’s ruled lines. Be precise about the area, fields, or output needed.
- Select email copies, CD or flash drive, household labels, individual labels, printouts, or copies. Add the requester’s printed name, signature, phone, and email.
- Add a full address if the result will be mailed. Submit by email, fax, mail, or in person to the county elections office.
- Wait for the office to contact you when the record is ready. Confirm the cost before a large or tailored order.
The Gaston County Board of Elections accepts requests at 410 W. Franklin Blvd., Suite 50, Gastonia, by mail at P.O. Gaston County Voter Request Costs
The county’s posted form lists a CD or flash drive at $25 each. Printouts and copies cost $0.05 per page, with the first 50 pages free. Labels cost $0.01 each, and postage is charged at actual cost. Payment may be made by cash, personal check, certified check, or money order. Credit and debit cards are not accepted. Cash cannot be used when fees reach $50 or more.
Requests are handled in the order received each Friday. Research, scanning, and copying physical documents can take up to two weeks. The office does not process them from ten days before early voting begins through ten days after an election. Plan around that blackout if timing matters.
The form is dated March 2019 and cites former G.S. 163A-871. Election law was later recodified, and the voter-list rules now sit chiefly in G.S. 163-82.10. Treat the posted prices as the county’s current published schedule, but confirm them before a large order.
Gaston County Voter Roll Maintenance
An inactive record is not the same as an immediate cancellation. Under G.S. 163-82.14, election officials perform nondiscriminatory maintenance tied to federal and state rules. Death matches and confirmed out-of-county moves are processed at least weekly. A near relative or personal representative may submit a signed death statement, which triggers removal within one week.
After each congressional election, officials mail confirmations to registrants who have not voted or otherwise verified an address. Removal can follow only after no response and no voting through the second later U.S. House general election. One missed election does not cause cancellation. Final felony convictions follow a separate notice process with 30 days to object.
A statewide Registration Repair Project addresses records missing validated driver-license or SSN4 indicators. NCSBE stated that affected voters were not being removed because of that project, though unresolved cases could require provisional ballots. Status and reason codes should therefore be read as current administrative facts, not guesses about eligibility.
Protect Gaston County Voter Addresses
A voter with a valid protective order or current North Carolina Address Confidentiality Program card may ask the county board to shield a residential address. The request also needs a signed safety statement. While the protection remains in force, the person’s name, precinct, and other registration facts remain public, but the home address does not.
The North Carolina Address Confidentiality Program serves qualifying survivors who have moved or plan to move. It supplies an Attorney General-designated substitute address and mail forwarding. Enrollment runs through a trained application assistant. The actual address remains available only for election administration, law enforcement, or a person authorized by a court.
Note: Present the ACP authorization card and signed safety statement directly to the county elections board while certification remains valid.
Historical Gaston County Voter Records
Current databases are not the only route. The State Archives Gaston County guide includes elections among its county-record groups. Exact poll-book and registration-register containers were not identified in the online guide, so reference staff should confirm the relevant boxes and dates before a trip.
A second fallback is the FamilySearch collection “North Carolina, Voter Registers and Certificates of Registration, 1843-1965.” Its date range describes the statewide collection, not complete survival for every Gaston year. Gaston County formed from Lincoln County in 1846. A person living in the area earlier may therefore appear in Lincoln records, or in older Tryon material, rather than under Gaston.
Historical voter sources can establish residence, eligibility, or community presence at a point in time. They should be paired with deeds, court files, census schedules, newspapers, or directories when identity is uncertain.
Use Gaston Voter Records Lawfully
Open voter data supports civic review, family research, and checking one’s own registration. It does not give permission to threaten, stalk, harass, impersonate, or harm anyone. Never treat a public address as proof that a person still lives there, especially when a file refresh, move, or pending county review may affect the record.
Government election workers do not conduct door-to-door demands that everyone re-register. NCSBE investigated false official claims and inaccurate applications in 2026 and noted that falsifying a registration form is a Class I felony. Verify registration through the official lookup or the Gaston County Board of Elections. General North Carolina access-law questions belong with the broader Gaston County public records process, while election-specific confidentiality rules control the voter file.
Use records with care. Confirm data with its custodian, respect protected addresses, and never use voter information to intimidate or deceive another person.
